More Than Milk: The Story of Morning Fresh Dairy in Bellvue, Colorado

Tucked into the folds of Pleasant Valley, just a short drive west of Fort Collins, sits one of Northern Colorado's most beloved hidden gems. Morning Fresh Dairy has been a fixture of the Bellvue landscape since 1894 — that's not a typo. While most businesses celebrate a 25th anniversary with a banner and a cake, the Graves family is well into their sixth generation of farming the same land, milking the same herd's descendants, and delivering fresh, all-natural dairy products to doorsteps across the region. If that doesn't earn a place on your must-visit list, keep reading — because there's a lot more to this farm than a great glass of milk.

A Family Legacy Over 130 Years in the Making

The story of Morning Fresh Dairy is inseparable from the story of the Graves family. Rob Graves, the fourth generation owner, is the steward of a tradition that stretches back to before Colorado was even celebrating its 20th year of statehood. Through droughts, economic swings, and the relentless march of industrial agriculture that swallowed up so many small farms, the Graves family held on — not by cutting corners, but by doubling down on quality and community.

What makes a sixth-generation farm survive when so many others don't? Ask anyone who's tasted the milk and they'll tell you part of the answer: it's just better. Morning Fresh uses glass bottles, minimal processing, and no artificial additives. Their milk goes from cow to your doorstep in as little as 24 hours. That's not marketing language — that's just what happens when your farm, your processing facility, and your delivery route are all run by the same family that's been doing this since the Grover Cleveland era.

The Graves family also has deep roots in the academic and scientific community of Northern Colorado. Rob's father, Dr. Robert Graves, was a veterinarian who graduated from Colorado State University in 1956. That connection to CSU and the surrounding region has shaped the dairy's identity in ways that go far beyond farming — more on that in a moment.

The Farm Itself: Sustainable by Tradition

Morning Fresh Dairy operates entirely out of its Bellvue location at 5821 West County Road 54E, nestled against the foothills in the beautiful Pleasant Valley. The farm practices what today's marketers might call "climate-smart agriculture," though for the Graves family it's just common sense passed down through generations: take care of the land, take care of the cows, and the cows will take care of you.

Animal welfare is taken seriously here, and the dairy prides itself on what it doesn't do as much as what it does. No hormones, no unnecessary additives, no factory-farm shortcuts. The milk is all natural, which in this case is a genuine claim backed by practice, not just a label on a carton.

One of the most distinctive things about Morning Fresh is their glass bottle program, which Rob and Lori Graves brought back in the 90s. It's better for the taste, they'll tell you — and it's better for the planet. An on-site industrial dishwasher sanitizes every returned bottle so it can be filled and delivered again — a cycle that repeats and keeps an enormous number of single-use plastic jugs from ever reaching the landfill.

They've made returning bottles easy, too. Home delivery customers just rinse their bottles and leave them in their milk box for the driver to pick up. Retail customers can return bottles to any store that carries Morning Fresh products. And if you forget where you bought it? No worries — the Howling Cow Café and local farmers' markets will always take them back. It's a closed-loop system that's been quietly operating long before "sustainability" became a buzzword.

Come See Where Your Milk Comes From

Here's something you don't get to do at most dairies: actually visit the farm, meet the cows, and watch the whole operation up close. Morning Fresh offers public farm tours that are genuinely one of the most fun and educational outings available in Northern Colorado, for kids and adults alike.

My husband and I visited the dairy on a beautiful Saturday morning in April.  Pictures of employees were seen throughout the tour, highlighting the contributions of everyone on the team (cows included). I loved learning about the history of both the property and the Graves Family from our wonderful guides Ally and Amy.  Also fascinating was how the actual milking process works, including watching the cows ride the carousel.

Petting baby cows was definitely a highlight, as were the ample samples of Morning Fresh’s delicious products at the end of the tour. Back in the Howling Cow Cafe where we started, I saw people enjoying something I have never seen before … milk flights.  As for us, we ended up leaving with two kinds of house made Ummber’s Ice Cream and a commitment to sign up for home delivery service.

Tours run 60 to 90 minutes and are priced at just $6 per person — an absolute bargain for what you get. Comfortable shoes are recommended (but the cows won't judge the rest of your outfit).

For groups, private tours are available for $120 and accommodate up to 20 guests — a perfect option for field trips, birthday parties, corporate outings, or any group that wants a more personalized experience. Just reach out to events@morningfreshdairy.com to arrange it.

The farm also hosts holiday tours and special events throughout the year, so there's always a reason to come back. One fan-favorite is the annual Eggnog Bottle Artwork Contest, where local artists and kids get to design the season's eggnog bottle — a quirky, creative tradition that says a lot about how Morning Fresh thinks about community.

The Howling Cow Café: Coffee, Cream, and Country Air

After your tour — or even if you just happen to be driving through Pleasant Valley — the Howling Cow Café is worth a stop in its own right. Located right on the farm property, this café has developed a reputation as one of the best coffee spots in all of Northern Colorado, and it's easy to see why.

The menu is simple but satisfying — handcrafted coffee drinks, fresh-baked goods, made-to-order sandwiches, and of course, Morning Fresh Dairy products in all their glory. You can sample their flavored milks and noosa yoghurt, pick up locally produced food items, and browse merchandise from Morning Fresh and the Howling Cow brand. Local artists also display their work in the café, giving it a warmth and character you won't find at any chain coffee shop.

Beyond the café itself, there's plenty of open space to wander — a shaded patio, a disc golf course (winner can earn a free cup of chocolate milk), winding paths through the backlawn, and sweeping views of the valley that make it easy to linger. Cyclists regularly make it a rest stop on rides through the valley. Families bring kids out for a morning that feels like an adventure. And the setting — farmland, foothills, Colorado sky — is hard to beat on a sunny day.

Café hours are Monday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Tuesday through Sunday 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. You can reach the café directly at (970) 980-9560.

Giving Back: A Family That Thinks Beyond the Farm

This is where the story of Morning Fresh Dairy takes a turn that most people don't expect — and it's perhaps the most remarkable part of all.

Rob Graves' father, Dr. Robert Graves, didn't just raise a family and run a veterinary practice. He changed medicine. In the early 1980s, his daughter Laura was diagnosed with leukemia at just ten years old. Her best hope for survival was a bone marrow transplant from someone with a matching HLA type — a genetic marker that determines compatibility. None of Laura's family were a match, so Dr. Graves pursued a then-radical idea: canvassing doctors, nurses, and blood bank workers to find a stranger who might be compatible.

Miraculously, a match was found. Laura received a transplant from a non-related donor and survived for another 18 months. She became the first person in history to successfully receive a bone marrow transplant from a non-related donor — a medical milestone that proved it could be done. That proof of concept, driven by a desperate father's love and ingenuity right here in Northern Colorado, helped bring about the National Marrow Donor Program. Formally established in 1987 with federal and Navy backing, it operates today as NMDP and completes more than 7,000 transplants annually for patients with no other lifesaving option.

The Graves family's connection to NMDP (formerly known as Be The Match) is still alive and active. Morning Fresh Dairy actively encourages customers to join the bone marrow donor registry, and you can sign up directly through a link on their website. It's a reminder that behind every bottle of milk is a family with a story — and a deep sense of responsibility to the people around them.

The giving-back spirit doesn't stop there. The Caps4Cash program lets local schools earn money by collecting bottle caps from Morning Fresh glass bottles. Schools cash them in at a nickel apiece and spend the funds however they choose. It's a simple, clever program that turns everyday purchases into community support.

On top of all that, Morning Fresh also runs an ongoing Milk and Meals drive to provide support to local food banks.

Fresh From the Farm, Wherever You Are

You don't have to live in Bellvue to enjoy Morning Fresh Dairy. Worth the Drive, Worth the Story

Come see this face!

It would be easy to sum up Morning Fresh Dairy as a charming local farm with great milk and a cozy café. All of that is true. But spending a little time with their story — the 130-year family legacy, the life-saving work tied to NMDP, the genuine care for their community and their land — reveals something rarer: a business that actually lives up to its values.

Whether you're a longtime Northern Colorado local or just passing through on your way into the mountains, Morning Fresh Dairy is the kind of place that gives you something to feel good about. Come for the coffee. Stay for the calves. Leave knowing a little more about where your food comes from — and the remarkable family that's been putting it on your table for over a century.
